Electro Technical Officer Course is a pre-sea training course approved by Directorate General of Shipping (DGS). The course is designed to give adequate knowledge and skill to candidates to take on the responsibility as Electro Technical Officer in Merchant ships.
Electro-Technical Officers Course is a specialized course which is mandatory to those who want to serve on ships. The pre-sea course is conducted at various DGS approved Maritime training institutes and deals with initial familiarization with ship board systems, equipment’s and machineries involved in the operation of the vessels.
The relevant electrical/ electronic equipment’s, control and automation systems, will be dealt with in detail to enable the candidate nurture decision making for troubleshooting, rectification of defects. The course makes the candidate aware of the risks involved at sea and importance of imbibing the safety culture.
Upon successful completion of the classroom training, cadets are awarded with pre-sea course completion certificate and qualified to join a ship as an Electro Technical Officer, where he/she is required to complete at least 6 months’ training service in merchant navy vessels.
Upon completion of the training period, one is to awarded with Certificates of Competency (CoC) under new category of technically qualified and trained officer. The course consists of 17 weeks (4 months) of long classroom (pre-sea) training and 10 months long onboard training where the cadet is entitled to stipend, free boarding & lodging.

i) Candidates seeking admissions to Marine Programme are strongly recommended to have Passports. Please note that the name in the Passport should be the same as given in the 10th Std. Certificate.
ii) Admission to this course is granted after fulfilling below mentioned eligibility criteria.
Eligibility
Educational Qualification
The candidate should hold a Bachelor's Degree
B.E. / B. Tech in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Electronics and Telecommunication / Communication Engineering or Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering after attending a course of 4 years duration from a UGC recognized University and or approved by AICTE with minimum 65% aggregate marks, minimum 65% marks in the final year.
In class 12th or equivalent have scored minimum 65% marks in PCM or Diploma aggregate 65%.
For Diploma candidates with lateral entry to 2nd year of B.Tech, need to have scored 65% and above in Diploma followed by the Degree eligibility criteria.

Should have obtained not less than 50% marks in English as a separate subject, at either 10th or 12th standard conducted by a recognized Board/ University.
Age Limit
Maximum age should not exceed 28 years on the date of commencement of course – usually commences in March every year.

Physical and Medical Standards
Physically fit and should meet the medical requirements as specified by DGS guidelines, eyesight 6/12 in each eye without visual aids and no color blindness.
